# Wi-Fi QR code for guests, made in your browser

Type the network name and the password. Your guest points a phone at the code and joins — no dictating a twenty-character password across the room, no writing it on a chalkboard where anyone walking past can read it.

1. **Copy the name exactly** — Capital letters, spaces and dashes count. A network called “Cafe Central” will not match “cafe central”.
2. **Pick the security** — WPA covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 — that is almost everything made in the last fifteen years.
3. **Print it and put it on the table** — A code the size of a beer mat is read from a chair. Ours tells you the millimetres for the distance you choose.

## Works on iPhone and on Android
Both open the camera, see the network and offer to join. Nothing to install on the guest's side and nothing to install on yours.

## The password never leaves your device

The code is built here, in this page. There is no server that could store the password to your network — and that matters more for Wi-Fi than for anything else.

## Your real password stays private in a different sense too

Guests join without ever seeing the characters, so nobody writes them down or passes them on.

## We check that the code reads before you print it

A Wi-Fi code that fails is worse than no code: the guest tries twice, gives up and asks anyway. Ours is scanned back by our own reader first.

## Questions people ask

### Does it work on an iPhone?

Yes, since iOS 11 — the camera app recognises the Wi-Fi code and offers to join the network. On Android it has worked since version 10, and on older ones through Google Lens.

### Will it work with WPA3?

Yes. Pick WPA — that setting covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3, because they use the same field in the code. WEP is only for routers older than about 2006, and if that is your router, changing it matters more than the code.

### What if my network name has a comma or a semicolon?

We escape those characters for you. Semicolons, commas, colons, quotes and backslashes have a special meaning inside a Wi-Fi code, and a generator that ignores that produces a code that joins a network with a slightly different name — which of course does not exist.

### Can I use it for my hidden network?

Yes, tick the hidden-network box. The phone then searches for a network that does not announce its name; without that box it would look only among the visible ones and find nothing.

### How big should I print it?

For a code on a table, four centimetres is plenty. For one behind the bar, count a tenth of the distance people scan from: three metres means thirty centimetres. Set the size in the settings and the PDF comes out at exactly that measurement.
